Tianjin, one of China’s four municipalities directly under the Central Government, is the largest opening coastal city in North China, one of the National Famous Historical and Cultural Cities in China, as well as a member of the first group of the outstanding tourist cities of China.
Tianjin is located in northeast part of the North China Plain and the center of Bohai-Rim, bordering the Bohai Sea in the east, leaning against the Yanshan Mountain in the north. Tianjin is within the UTC+08:00 time zone, with a latitude ranging from 38° 34' to 40° 15' N, and longitude ranging from 116° 43' to 118° 04' E. Tianjin is located in northeast part of the North China Plain and lower reaches of the Haihe River, bordering the Bohai Sea in the east and Beijing in the northwest, leaning against the Yanshan Mountain in the north. The Haihe River forms within Tianjin Municipality at the confluence of the Ziya River, Daqing River, Yongding River, North Grand Canal, and South Grand Canal. Hence, Tianjin has long been renowned as “Sea Inlet of Nine Rivers” and “Communications Center of River and Sea”.
With its obvious geographical advantages, Tianjin is located in the center of Bohai economic rim, backed by the vast area of North China and facing Northeast Asia. Tianjin is an important hub for connections to more than ten provinces and cities in North China, and it is also the largest port city in North China. Tianjin is 120 kilometers away from Beijing, having historically been an important fort and doorway to the capital city.
Administrative Divisions and Population
Tianjin is divided into 15 districts and one county, including Binhai New Area, Heping District, Hebei District, Hedong District, Hexi District, Nankai District, Hongqiao District, Dongli District, Xiqing District, Jinnan District, Beichen District, Wuqing District, Baodi District, Jinghai District, Ninghe District, and Ji County.
By the end of 2014, the resident population of Tianjin has reached 15.16 million, with 4.46 million more compared to last year. Among them, the migrant population was 4,76 million, which has increased by 350.000, and accounts for 79.1% of the resident population. The residential permit system has gone smoothly. By the end of the year, the registered population was 10.16 million, which included agricultural population of 3.71 million and non-agricultural population of 6.45 million. The birth rate of the year was 8.19 per thousand, while the death rate was 6.05 per thousand. The natural growth rate of population was 2.14 per thousand.

City Flower of Tianjin — China Rose
With a long history of the cultivation of China roses, Tianjin has been called the "Hometown of China Rose", and the main growing regions are located along the North Grand Canal and Ziya River. China Roses are popular with people as they can bloom year-round, with bright color and strong fragrance. Through public appraisal and the recommendation of Bureau of Parks and Woods and Garden Association, China Rose was chosen as the city flower at the 16th session of the Standing Committee of the 10th Tianjin Municipal People' s Congress in 1984. According to the statistics, there were 1.87 million China roses in 1991, about 600 species. In Tianjin, there are altogether seven China rose gardens and eight roads named after China rose, which become an important part of the scene of Zhonghuan Cailian (Charming Middle Beltway), one of the ten most famous attractions of Tianjin. Tianjin China Rose Festival has been held since 1991 by the municipal government.
The Origin of Tianjin
Called “Jin” for short, Tianjin literally means "Heaven's Ferry". This name refers to the fact that the emperor (son of heaven) once forded the river. Tianjin has also been called other names throughout it’s history, including Jingu and Jinmen
The formation of this area is triggered by the building of the Grand Canal in the Sui Dynasty (581-618). The present Sancha Hekou near Jingang Bridge, which used to be the confluence of the South Grand Canal and North Grand Canal, is the birthplace of Tianjin. After the mid-Tang Dynasty (618-907), Tianjin became the port for rice and silk from south to north. Zhigu Village was set up in Tianjin in the Jin Dynasty (1115-1234) as a strategic military town. In the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), Zhigu became a grain transport and shipping hub. Haijin Town was set up under the administration of Zhigu.
